David Purkiss - Resident Conductor

David began his conducting career in 2010 when he was appointed Resident Conductor of Foresters Brass and later went on to become the Musical Director of the Thoresby Colliery Band for before joining The Staffordshire Band in 2013, during which time he helped develop the band, leading them back to the Championship Section of the Midland Area. In 2016, David took on the role of Musical Director with The Ratby Co-operative Band; a position he held until 2022 with great success on the concert and contest platform, contributing to some of the band’s most momentous occasions in recent history. In 2022, David was delighted to accept the position of Resident Conductor with the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, working alongside Allan Withington, the band’s Professional Musical Director.

Allan Withington - Professional Conductor

Allan grew up amongst the intense brass band community of Northern England. He was taught to play the cornet by his father and eventually played principal cornet with both the Wingates band and Fodens band. After a post graduate course, on trumpet, under Howard Snell, at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester he embarked upon a freelance career playing with many of Great Britain's leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra. Allan is one of the best known and respected conductors in the brass band movement with a host of contest and concert performance success and is renowned for his high-class programmes. Living in Norway and is the Professional Conductor of Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, Stavanger Brass Band and musical advisor for Valaisia Brass Band in Switzerland. Furthermore, he is a member of the much-acclaimed trumpet section of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
